A Departure

OK, this has nothing to do with nutrition, but it does have to do with why I haven’t posted anything this past weekend. Friday after work, Jeff and I had to have our beloved golden retriever, Henry, put to sleep.

The previous week-and-a-half had been difficult, as symptoms what what now looks like Cushing’s Syndrome became pretty bad. Add to that the gradually progressing arthritis that he had in his hips (he had trouble with stairs, and sometimes had a very hard time standing up), and it was time to put an end to his discomfort before it turned to something worse.

We got Henry 11 1/2 years ago when he was an 8-week-old furry butterball, a few months after we bought our first house. So saying goodbye was agonizing, as anyone who has loved an animal companion knows. But better to have loved and lost, than to never have loved at all. Henry was the best dog anyone could ever hope to have, and he’s left big paws to fill for any future dog.
