Happy Tuesday! I’m freshly back from Las Vegas (and feeling fresher now that I’m out of 100+ degree temps…dry heat or not). If you didn’t have a chance to check out my On Nutrition column in Sunday’s Seattle Times, “Nutrition: Just for men,” please do. The advice is geared for men, but really, it’s good advice for everyone.

On the theme of nutrition for men, here are a few links I came across recently:

  • A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that men with prostate cancer who substituted plant-based fats (avocados, nuts, seeds, vegetable oil) for some of the saturated fat and carbohydrates in their diet had better survival rates. For more, read the HealthDay writeup, “Tweaking Dietary Fat Mix Might Boost Prostate Cancer Survival.”
  • A fair amount of attention has been paid to the importance of the family meal in helping kids become healthy eaters. Dads (and moms, too), might pick up a few good tips from the Chicago Parent article “Four dad dietitians give advice on family meals.”
For my next column, I’ll be talking about coconut oil. Is is healthy? Is it not healthy? What does the science say? I had a few people beg me to write about it, and I finally caved in.
