My April Cookbook Challenge bled into May, largely because I’ve barely been home this month so it made no sense to pick new books (I have my June books lined up, though!).
I didn’t get to actually cook from my April-May picks as much as I would have liked, but I did try some new recipes (the primary objective) and had a chance to really sit down and look through the books at length (secondary objective). Each of these books fully deserves a spot on my crowded bookshelves, and I’ve flagged many recipes that I will happily make somewhere down the road.
I cooked the most from David Lebovitz’s My Paris Kitchen, partly because it’s a more recent addition to my collection and partly because I love his blog posts. I made his sardine spread, spiced meatballs with Sriracha sauce and his French lentil salad with goat cheese and walnuts (I used feta) , and they were all delicious. The lentil salad is pictured below with and Dorie Greenspan’s cafe-style grated carrot salad
I didn’t delve into Greenspan’s Around My French Table as deeply, but I am excited for future explorations of both her “traditional” French recipes as well as recipes that draw from the major ethnic cuisines in Paris/France (Moroccan tagines, etc.). I’ve cooked many recipes from Clotilde Dusoulier in the past, primarily from her blog Chocolate & Zucchini, including her eponymous chocolate and zucchini cake recipe. Oh, and this amazing flourless orange and ginger cake. I did not try anything new from her Chocolate and Zucchini cookbook, because I ran out of time! However, once the Seattle farmers markets are in full swing, I will be trying her chicken salad with peaches and hazelnuts, zucchini with olives, and roasted ratatouille (and her honey spice cake sooner than that, since I recently acquired some French four-spice blend).
In a nutshell, I highly recommend each of these books, especially if you have any Francophile tendencies whatsoever and/or appreciate masterful handling of fresh veggies (Lebovitz did once work at Chez Panisse, after all).
I also recommend putting the authors’ blogs on your reading list:
